Escaping the Scorch
We have officially hit the Houston summer which is a lot like walking behind a public bus. A Houston summer features extreme heat, suffocating humidity, and rays that are downright dangerous, so we are spending the middle parts of our days indoors.
Yesterday Pearl dubbed the first floor of our house "Central Park."
How a three-year-old gets an idea such as this is beyond me. She's never been to New York City. I guess once we told her that Central Park was one of the biggest parks in the world, and she loves parks. Still.
Carrie is picking up new vocabulary words. At least we suspect that the utterances are words. We think she said "swing" at the park. We think she said "peas" at dinner. Perhaps I should call them proto words?
Despite the lack of language--or perhaps because of it--Carrie is hilarious. I don't understand how it happens, but she is always cracking us up. She and Pearl seem to be able to communicate well, whether talking or not.
These days Pearl and Carrie seem keenly interested in painting, cars (the vehicles, the movie, the soundtrack, etc.), blocks, and dinosaurs. Each girl is most interested in whatever her sister is working with at the moment. Ah, human nature can be so cruel!
We had a nice weekend. Marcia and I finally celebrated our 10th with dinner at t'afia and a poetry reading by Amiri Baraka. It was a great evening out. My father is 83 today. Happy birthday, Dad!
maybe it's a 2nd kid thing. Toby always cracks us up! whether it's when he asks for his twimtoot (swimsuit) or the way he constantly moves to the music in his head or when he spits at me when he doesn't like what i've told him...i just crack up at every darn thing he does! maybe cuz i've been there, done that before and am savoring each and every silly look...or maybe it's just cuz his personality is just so dang funny!
happiest of anniversary wishes to you and Marcia!
