A cute baby named Pearl is seven weeks old today. She has already been to the doctor's office four or five times. She has a wonderful pediatrician named Doctor Alex. We are all very fond of him. So far, every time we take Pearl in and describe what we perceive as symptoms, the remedies all seem to involve water or air or both. Humidifiers, aspirators, etc. I'm not complaining! But this has made me a bit suspicious.
This morning I'm studying the receipt we received when we left the office on Saturday. I'm wondering about the diagnostic code 465.9 [URI, acute]. Could it be that, when translated, this code means something like: NEW PARENT ANGST (and nothing more)? Those of you who are doctors, please be honest here. We're depending on you.
Hey. URI stands for upper respiratory infection. I am sure that you have found this out by now. The doctor is probably thinking, "What are these two crazy people bringing this baby to me for every week" but she probably does have an upper respiratory infection, or i.e. cold. He probably is not thinking that, but does realize that you are first time parents, and are a bit anxious. Just remember that new babies get an average of 6-8 colds a year, especially if they are in daycare. HOpe she feels better soon. P.s. The humidifiers do work, as well as normal saline nose drops, suction bulbs, elevating the head of her crib.
