What do you do to find peace and tranquility?
While our doctors stop short of labeling Pearl a colic baby, we have had some long nights of trial and tribulation. Longer for Marcia than for me, since I've gone back to work now. It's very upsetting to see your baby so upset. So we've been seeking advice from our posse.
Our friend Melanie, mom of Oliver, pointed us toward a book that had helped them through the first few months, The Happiest Baby on the Block. We also bought the CD of white noise that goes by the same title. The package from amazon.com [in the spirit of full disclosure, I do own stock in this company!] arrived yesterday, and we began reading immediately, taking turns exchanging book for crying baby and back again. We had been introduced to Dr. Karp's famous 5 S's in our childbirth class, but the book gave us a more detailed sense of how they work.
Last night we tried it out, and our results were about 50/50. We still have to work on our swaddling technique. This seems to be key, as we find our way along the road to peace and tranquility, two moms and a little baby.

Jesse is 11 years old now. Since we've had the twins, I've come to realize--because of Shannon's curious compulsion for reading labels--that I overmedicated Jesse's allergies by about 1 tablespoon per dosage for most of his infancy. He still sleeps quite well.
