Ever since I started blogging I've been following the saga of City Mama and her hilarious child, Bunny. I chose the word "saga" intentially because in the past 8 months a whole lot has happened with their family. I've never actually met Bunny, but I love reading about her.
Lately Pearl's favorite book is called I am a Bunny by Ole Risom. We read it forwards, backwards, and upside down. The Richard Scarry illustrations have an unusual depth. The bunny, Nicholas by name, tells what he likes about each of the seasons. Pearl turns the pages herself now. She is a very athletic turner of pages!
It's interesting to me to try to imagine why certain books appeal to her more than others. Here in Houston, we don't have four seasons. Maybe two? But she couldn't know that yet.
Her favorite picture seems to be the one with pictures of frogs. The one page she seems to dislike is the one in which the bunny goes to sleep. Have you noticed how many children's books for kids this age end with the character going to sleep? Maybe Marcia and I have projected this--but we've both noticed it separately--when we get to a picture with a character going to sleep, Pearl SLAMS the book shut with extra zeal. For the new readers, I will simply add: Our little bunny does not like going to bed one bit.
Have you noticed certain images that you child adores or abhors?
Of COURSE she prefers the frogs. She's a smart girl. :)

Jacob loved ducks, for months and months. And dogs. I guess because they are two things you see everyday in the street here as well and he quickly learnt to say duck and dog in dutch. Now, suddenly, its sheep! Its so nice to see him re-discovering all his books but this time searching for the sheep. Ducks and Dogs are out! Sheep are in! Sheep go Baaaa! (He doesn't like things sleeping either)

Isn't if funny how a child will latch onto certain books. Some of the ones my daughter has loved I can't figure out - they aren't even that good.
I have 2 theories on the "books ending with the character going to sleep" thing. Either authors find this a natural way to end a book, or they are so desperate to get their own children in bed that they write about it - wishful writing!
That little girl of yours is a cutie! They grow too fast, don't they!

'I am a Bunny' was one of my son's favortie books. He is 16 now, and when we needed to buy books for a baby shower recently that one was tops on his list.
(the kids also chose - There's a Nightmare in my Closet, There's a Monster at the End of this Book, Are You My Mother)

My youngest is 8 years old, and he still LOVES to hear "Goodnight Moon" at bedtime.
Everytime I read the line, "...the old lady whispering hush," he giggles; as I've always whispered the word 'hush.' He's giggled over this since he was 3 years old.

I will forever be a fan of both "Goodnight Moon" and "Runaway Bunny."
