Our friend Sarah is visiting this weekend from NYC.
She is getting an abnormally glorious impression of Houston. We've had weather that could only be called perfect.
It's also rodeo season. The appeal of the Houston Livestock and Rodeo Show can not be overestimated. It seems like everyone goes to it, regardless of everything. In addition to the big stars of country music--Clint Black, Martina McBride--who perform there, they also feature folks such as Alicia Keyes, Maroon 5, and Jimmy G y El Grupo Mazz. Even I attend every four or five years. Yee haw!
Pearl really "fell" for Sarah. She adores her cousin with that name so maybe a pattern is developing here? One night Sarah told Pearl that she is cool. No one has ever told Pearl that. Can a toddler be cool? A New Yorker would know, I guess.
Sarah really is cool. We used to teach in the same high school together when I lived in NYC. We shared an office. Now she teaches a different school, and it is the coolest one ever. I'm not being silly here: 100% serious. She's on sabbatical this year and is writing a book-length essay on Toni Morrison's Beloved. She told us all about the process of writing it. She told us about the Christo gates in Central Park.
Sarah is allergic to cats, and so we've spent a lot of time on our deck. The bugs aren't too bad yet so it's been wonderful to catch up with her. It occurred to me that we didn't even have to clean the house before she showed up each day. Maybe we should actively seek out friends with cat allergies in the future? This idea could be a real social life break-through for us.
I bet Pearl is cool. ;) What's cool however is a book long essay on Beloved. WOW.
I wish I was closer to NYC so that I could have seen the Gates. Heard they were pretty neat.
Happy Monday to Pearl!

Jonas now uses the word "cool" all the time. It cracks me up.
Sounds like a great time.
