We all love our kids. Perhaps I should qualify that statement by acknowledging my audience as the readers of parenting blogs. Based on some of the scary stories you hear, it seems that the love of children is perhaps not completely universal. Back to my topic, though: the stereotype of the *older* parent includes an intense and no-doubt excessive interest in what one's children think and say and make and do. And so I begin with a disclaimer of sorts. Next paragraph!
So I've been studying Pearl's art work. Here's something she made a week or so ago. For many months, she made pictures in which different colored circles overlap in a multi-hued vortex. They were cool. I'll have to ask my buddy Jack to scan one of those for the blog archives.
Lately, though, she separates the colors. Here she's made four of these circular shapes. I am interested in the pattern. I'm not sure what else to say about it though.
This next picture is one she made today. I still see her repeating a pattern, but this time it's a linear mark. She made some of these marks in her notebook last night and told me they were paintbrushes. Today she didn't explain them, and I didn't inquire.
I'm not trying to be profound here. I just find tracking these changes somewhat fascinating.
They're very deliberate. Some kids just scribble away crazily. She seems to be a careful artist.
No judgement either way, but it's a difference I've noted when teaching preschool in the past.

Tracking those changes is fascinating. Keep it up!

My daughter spent a lot of time in physiotherapy when she was small and believe it or not childrens artwork follows a definite pattern.
From the circles kids do go to the vortex. I wish I could give you some more info but there is an order that children follow as they grow!

Watching a child's early artwork is fascinating. So much of their personality comes through. All four of my kids were different in the way that they approached art as kids.
My youngest used to sign his name in a really cool way, just putting the letters in random order and making a design out of the name. It was hard to let him go to kindergarten, knowing he would be taught to write the letters to always go a certain way and in a straight line .... I loved his early creativity.

My nephew the future engineer is 17 months old and he is into 'process' in his art. Take cap of marker, make single line, put cap on marker, choose new marker, repeat.
As a grown up artist-type person, I still love watching kids create and I take great satisfaction (ok, bolstering)in the fact that Picasso, Miro and other modern 'greats' did the same. It's uncensored visual exploration...what can be cooler than that?
And the circle thingies are way cool.
