This week the polls in Texas are open for early voters, and Marcia
decided to check that all-American item off of her to-do list today. Pearl asked her to wait until after preschool so that she could come along. She said she was interested in the presidential race and wanted to vote too.
One of the polling places is located near the girls' school, so after the 11:30 a.m. pick-up, they went there and got into the rather long line to wait. Just ahead of them was former President and First Lady George and Barbara Bush. Carrie didn't care who was in the line. She found a chair pushed up against the wall and played with her toy dinosaurs for the half hour. But Marcia introduced herself and Pearl. Mr. Bush pointed his cane in Pearl's direction and said, "Hey there, little feller."
As you know, we're not republicans, but still it's kind of exciting to get to meet a former president. This afternoon when I asked Pearl about voting, she said she was pretty disappointed. Why was that? I asked. Well, she said, there were no runners, and we never got to see the race.
Hannah was always disappointed she didn't get to see the "boat."
This year, she's learned from our neighbors that the Right wants to take your money and give it to the rich, and the left wants to give it to the poor.

What a cute comment from Pearl about the race!
And you're right, even if they aren't from your party, there's something exciting about seeing a president. Also, I think there's lots to be said for teaching kids to respect the office, even if they don't necessarily support the individual holding it.

I can't help thinking that Pearl might be on to something: maybe if the candidates had to compete in some actual track & field events, voter turnout would improve?
Also, former President Bush looks much taller than I ever expected.

I've always thought of Pearl as a 'little feller.'

What an exciting story for Pearl!
Bush Sr. must be feeling social. Our eldest daughter met him and shook his hand at a Texans football game two weekends ago. When she came home and told us about it, Vada and I both just froze and then panicked... "What did you say?!?!" - out of fear she might have repeated any one of the billion things we have said about his family! She didn't.

Poor Pearl, missing the race. That was so good I read it out to my husband and we both had a very good laugh - thanks!
