My grandfather. I really wished he could have been with us last night to watch the election coverage. He would have loved every moment of it.

My mother died in July. She was a working-class white woman from Kansas (I blogged about this on Monday) who grew up during segregation. She planned to vote for Obama and I sure wish she could have heard him speak last night.

I would like to get back that first time I could have kissed a woman...and chickened out. That cost me about five years of wondering...

A blanket of my fathers. It was "borrowed" from me at summer camp when I was 10 and never returned. I'm not sure why, but I often think about it and it's horrendous brown and yellow colors. I wish I still had it. It wasn't even special until it was gone, but I think the not having it makes it even more so.

Hope... oh wait, nope, got that one back with the presidential election race (although less so because of the election's effect on gay marriage and rights of LGBT individuals to adopt... hmm... there was a necklace I really liked that I lost.

The relationship I should've had with my mother but didn't because I'm gay.

time away from my 6 month olds, because I'm working and they're in day care.

My great-grandfather and great-grandmother. They would have been so happy to see Obama win. They were born in 1904, back when American Indians (like them, and me) couldn't vote.
Obama stands strong for tribal sovereignty and I hope that under his leadership, we will be able to retain and regain our lands.
And maybe get a Native lesbian character on TV who isn't a total lame stereotype! (Though Karina Lombard is half-Native, I wish they'd built that into Marina's character somehow)

My maternal grandmother. And my favorite coat in the world that was stolen out of my car in a private gated Beverly Hills community a few months ago...go figure.

Something that I, like most adults, have lost and wish I could get back is a child-like sense of wonder - that openness to the world around us and ability to get excited about simple things. I get glimpses of that sense of wonder when I accompany my young children on a nature hike - the curiosity, where they find the tiniest thing fascinating and, therefore, precious. But even at the tender ages of four and five, I can see that sense of wonder slipping away from them as they become more influenced by logic and science and technology and material possessions. Makes me sad.

I thought I'd lost my inspiration, but it found me again last night. :)

Childhood belief that no one could hurt me.
I remember the exact moment when fear, intimidation and humiliation entered my vocabulary. I was 11.

My belief that just because I generally do the right thing and follow the rules that the rules won't change - just be cause I am who I am.
