R.I.P. Little Ghost Boy
I worked as a Camper Advocate at a camp for kids of LGBT families for two summers. My job was to deal with any behavioral issues that the regular counselors couldn't handle, as well as to do all of the interactions with parents. The job involved a lot of behavioral contracts, trying to comfort incredibly homesick kids, some kids with really intense rage, some kids with really intense disabilities, oy. So many of them, one of me. I liked the relationships I formed with some kids who were really struggling, but it was so hard that people only came to me, for the most part, when they were in trouble or upset. It was definitely the hardest job I've ever had!

I work at a residential treatment center with foster children. They have been abused or neglected by someone in their lives, and typically have major behavioral issues, very serious daily medications, and have been unable to live safely in a foster home setting. Our job is to (attempt to) keep them safe throughout daily life while hoping to teach them some lessons on social skills, calming techniques, and how to handle all the emotions they have as a result of what they've been through. There's no boring shift, that's for sure.

Agreeing with Julia, being a parent has been harder than anything. With any other job, no matter how draining and rough it gets, I know I can always just walk away, and that takes away at least part of the stress. But I can't walk away from my heart, no matter how hard any given day gets.
